America's housing crisis extends beyond a shortage of homes—it also raises questions about who builds housing, who owns it, and who benefits from the wealth it creates.
Cruz Companies, one of the nation's largest Black-owned real estate and construction firms, has launched the BUILD BLACK campaign to highlight the connection between affordable housing, economic opportunity, and equitable participation in the development industry. Announced on Juneteenth, the initiative promotes greater investment in historically underserved communities while supporting Black and Brown developers, architects, contractors, and community organizations.
The campaign argues that affordable housing should not only address supply shortages but also create pathways for long-term wealth building. Cruz Companies emphasizes working with minority-owned businesses across its projects, aiming to expand access to development opportunities in an industry where minority representation remains limited.
Drawing attention to the lasting effects of redlining, unequal access to capital, and lower minority homeownership rates, BUILD BLACK encourages policymakers, industry leaders, and communities to view housing as both an economic and social investment.
Rather than focusing solely on building more homes, the campaign reframes the conversation around who participates in creating America's neighborhoods—and who shares in the economic benefits of their growth.
